Day 2 Report: Opener Usman Khawaja made a stunning 180, while Cameron Green scored a maiden century to give Australia the lead with difficult first innings total on Friday of 480.
Khawaja’s 422 ball knock saw him make a formidable partnership of fifth wicket bowlers with Green (114 runs). Australia was outscored in the second session in Ahmedabad.
Green described the experience as “remarkable”, referring to the time he spent finishing the first session, five minutes short of his total.
“But I was batting alongside Ussie the entire time, there were experiences at the other side and he was hitting beautifully, which helps a lot.”
Ravichandran Ashwin, an off-spinner, led the Indian attack. He claimed six wickets on a pitch that still looked good for batting at the largest cricket stadium in the world.
India was at 36 runs, with no run loss at stumps. However, it is still 444 runs behind the tourists.
Skipper Rohit Sharma (17) and Shubman Gil (18 (18) looked positive and attacked Australian spinners who bowled five out of the ten overs before the end of the play.
They broke four boundaries, including one by Nathan Lyon, a senior Australia spinner, who made a big six.
Khawaja stood out during his marathon knock, which ended on tea’s first ball. Axar Patel caught the left-hander lbw. This decision was denied by the umpire but was successfully reviewed by India.
The Indian bowlers were kept busy by Todd Murphy (41) & Lyon (34) in a 70-run stand. Ashwin finally broke through to take his 32nd Test five-wicket win.
Ashwin caught Murphy at lbw before he dismissed Lyon to end the innings.
Green, a giant all-rounder, won his first international hundred in a low-scoring series with a boundary in the second section. He was then greeted by Khawaja with a hug.
Green said that he felt more like a Test cricketer after removing the monkey from his back. This was his 20th Test for Australia.
“Good bag of wickets”
After a wicketless opening session, Ashwin took two wickets in a single over.
After Green was caught behind for 114 on a delivery that had been sliding down the leg side, he broke the Khawaja/Green stand — Australia’s highest Test partnership since 1979.
“It makes me feel good to return home with a bag full of wickets. Ashwin said that he would go to bed early tonight and be a little happier.
Khawaja, who scored his first Indian Test win on day one, and his 14th overall, continued to work hard to break the Australian record for the longest Test innings in India.
The 1979 record was set by Graham Yallop’s 392-ball strike in Kolkata.
Khawaja returned to his overnight 104 and took over after Australia decided to bat to try to win the series 2-2.
To win the four-match series, the hosts must win and earn a place in the World Test Championship final at The Oval in June.
In the absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith will be captaining Australia.
After the death of Cummins’ mother, Australia’s football players wore black armbands Friday.
